Root Canals
Ever heard someone use the phrase “I’d rather have a root canal” to describe something unpleasant? At Ballard Family Dentistry in Benbrook, we are changing people’s perceptions of root canals. Our skilled team of caring professionals will work hard to make your root canal procedure as pain-free and comfortable as possible. In fact, root canals are usually a relief to patients who are experiencing severe tooth pain.
A tooth’s root is filled with tissue called dental pulp, which is made up of nerves and blood vessels. Injury, extreme decay, or cracks and chips in the tooth may cause the pulp to become infected. When this happens, a patient can experience severe toothaches and tooth sensitivity.
When a patient undergoes a root canal (or “endodontic treatment”), the dentist will remove the injured tooth pulp and clean out the canal. The area is then replaced with synthetic filler, sealed and covered with a tooth crown for added strength and stability. Many of our Benbrook area patients choose to receive endodontic treatment while under dental sedation.
Root canal therapy can help save a tooth that would otherwise need to be removed completely. In addition to preserving an infected tooth, a root canal also helps to preserve surrounding teeth. Another benefit of root canals is that they can help patients avoid having more costly dental restorations in the future.
Please call Ballard Family Dentistry in Benbrook if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:
- Visible tooth injury
- Swelling around the tooth
- Tooth pain
- Sensitivity to hot or cold
- Abscess on the gums
It is important to remember that sometimes there are no signs that a patient needs treatment for a root canal. The best way to know if a root canal can help your teeth is to have regular dental checkups. Contact us today by filling out the appointment request form or give us a call at 817-900-6030.
